April Showers.. or Snow

In math this month, we have continued with our work on multiplication and division. We have also started discussions of fractions. Students have been working hard developing their strategies and understanding of these concepts. Please continue to have conversations at home with your child regarding the strategies they use.

As part of our morning routine, students work on math questions that reinforce their mental math strategies. Examples of these questions include triple digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, multiplication (up to 5x5), corresponding division questions and equations with a missing variable (5 + y = 10, solve for y).

During our writing time we have been focusing on sequence writing, or "How to" writing. Students have been asked to provide instructions of a familiar topic for a martian who has just landed on earth. Students have been creating step-by-step pieces such as, "How to brush your teeth", "How to make a peanut butter and jam sandwich", or "How to pack your lunch". Ask you child why it is important to be specific when creating these instructions. Once we complete our investigations into fractions and sequence writing we will be using our understanding to create a mini pizzas, where we will identify the parts of our pizza and how to make it.

Our investigations of our four countries (Peru, India, Tunisia and Ukraine) continue. Students have researched an animal specific to one of these countries and have created a google slides presentation showcasing specific information of this animal. Students have focused on the following: habitat, food, adaptations and life cycle. Students will be sharing their presentation with their peers over the next few weeks.

Please ensure to check out the website for an updated monthly calendar outlining the upcoming events in the month of May.
