Last Week of January 2019

This month we welcomed two new students into our learning community. Students were excited to show our new friends the rules and expectations of our class and made them feel included.

During our math time, we are continuing our learning of addition and subtraction strategies of double digit numbers and will be moving onto triple digit questions over the next week. Please speak with your child and have them explain which strategy they use. Students are able to use whichever strategy they are confident with, but is important that they can explain the process of the strategy.

We are also finishing up our work with shapes and solids. We looked at 3D shapes over the last few weeks, focusing on the characteristics of each. The terms we learned included: vertices, faces, edges, parallelogram, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, triangular and rectangular prism, pyramid, cube and sphere. Students have been working with the solids investigating each shape and are able to explain these terms. Please ask your child to tell you about them.

During our literacy time we have been focusing on using voice in our writing and what it sounds like when we read. We will be continuing with this and will also be reviewing what makes a good sentence and adding details to our writing. When we write, we are trying to have our reader create a picture in their head and generate a feeling.

During inquiry, we are continuing our understanding of our rights and responsibilities and needs and wants. Using this knowledge, students are creating a new country. Students will be designing travel brochures for their visitors explaining the various things that make their country unique. Each country must include the following information: shelter, climate, people, animals, how/where the water source comes from, food and traditions/celebrations. It is also a requirement that their country be able to sustain human life should their peers (or parents) decide to travel there. Ask your child what their country is like and how a visitor would survive.

We will also be looking at animal adaptations and the various characteristics of different animals, including the life cycle.

This week will be our final week of gymnastics. As usual we will be finishing off this unit with Mission Impossible. Please continue to ensure your child has appropriate clothing for gym time and are able to pass the 'head to toe check'.

**We still require parent volunteers to help with our swimming in March, especially males. If you are able to help, please ensure you have a valid police check and let Mrs. Grummett or Ms. Weldrick know.

Please remember that students will be going outside for body break and lunch recess every day, unless the weather is below -20. Please ensure your child has weather appropriate clothing, including mitts and a hat.

Pokemon Cards: Please keep ALL Pokemon Cards at home. If cards are brought to school, they will be confiscated. We have talked with the class about this.

Scholastic Book Orders: February book orders have been sent home. If you would like to order please ensure your order is placed online by February 6.

Hope everyone has enjoyed the first month of 2019!

REMINDER: There is no school Friday February 1, 2019.
