March Already!?

Hard to believe that the first two months of 2019 have come and gone!

Our class will be swimming this week (March 4-7). We will be leaving the school at 8:30am and will return at 10:45am. Please ensure your child has a towel and bathing suit. Girls must have their long hair tied back and all kids are encouraged to wear comfy clothes to change into after their lessons, as we are on a tight schedule and must ensure we are on time for the bus, both leaving the school and the pool. Girls please refrain from wearing lights, with feet, if possible. Please also pack an additional snack to be eaten at school. Please do NOT send money for the vending machine.

Cranston has new school t-shirts or hoodies for sale. Please refer to the school messenger email sent out for the sizing guide and ordering details. The deadline for ordering is March 19, 2019.

Literacy night will be held on Thursday March 7, 2019, from 6:00 - 7:00 pm. This is a drop in even where students will be sharing some of the reading and writing activities/games done in class. There will be a variety of games and information being shared from all grade levels.

Our learning during our inquiry time will be taking us on a journey throughout a variety of countries around the world. We will be taking a closer look at Tunisia, Peru, Ukraine and India, focusing on the unique geography, celebrations, people and quality of life of each country and will be comparing it to Canada. Please ask your child what they have discovered during their initial investigations and comparisons of these countries.

Our literacy time continues to focus on adding details to our writing by creating a picture and emotion in the reader. We will be creating some "Who Am I" riddles providing our readers with clues about a chosen animal. When reading, students are working on using personal strategies for decoding and making inferences about what they are reading. Students are also working on creating jot notes from information they are reading. This skill will help with putting information into their own words and also helps with understanding.

Students have been working on triple digit addition and subtraction (with re-grouping).  Any additional help with these concepts at home to get extra practice will help with confidence and understanding prior to moving on to multiplication and division next week.

Students have been taught various ways to solve both addition and subtraction questions.  They can use any way that makes sense to them and allows them to reach an accurate answer.  The goal is for students to use their mental math as much as possible.

As always, please ensure your child has appropriate clothing to wear when going outside for recess and body breaks.

We have noticed that students are eating all the food packed in their lunches and are still hungry. Please also speak with your child regarding their snacks and lunch and have them help pack additional snacks if needed.

Stay warm!!
