September 17-20

This week we had an opportunity to become archeologists. With the help of Discover Archeology, we learned how to re-build a bison using its bones, identify items that are categorized as 'artifacts' or 'ecofacts' and observe various spear heads. This opportunity was an amazing experience that will help with our rocks and minerals science unit.

We are continuing with our patterning in math in hopes of completing this unit next week. Our focus this week was building and discussing increasing, decreasing and repeating patterns. Please talk with your child about the elements of a pattern, and discuss the following:

- How many times does a pattern need to repeat for it to be a pattern?

- What is the 'core'? What does this mean?

- What is an increasing pattern?

- What is a decreasing pattern?

- Can you finish these patterns?

During our inquiry time, we have started our work in our Rocks and Minerals unit. To introduce this unit we began by sorting a variety of materials into groups based on specific attributes. This will help us understand how we will classify different rocks and minerals. During social studies we have began our study of mapping. To start we have mapped our bedroom and our classroom, we will be looking more closely at our community and the important things within our Cranston Community next week.

*** We would like to go on a community walk to the ridge, windmill and the pond on Tuesday afternoon. If you are able to join us please let one of us know. We will need at least 5 parents to join us.****

Next week Cranston School, as a whole, will be looking at 2 books, "Shi-shi-etko" by Nicola Campbell and "When We Were Alone" by David Robertson. The discussion coming from these books will lead up to Orange Shirt day on October 1st. The purpose of looking at these books is to develop a stronger sense belonging and community. As a school community we will then create an art project that will be displayed throughout the hub and the halls of the school.

REMINDERS;

Milk forms are available online and need to be submitted as soon as possible as the milk program will begin October 1

If you have not returned the media consent forms, please do so by next week.
