Week 1 Success!!

We have completed our first week in Grade 3! Students are creating new friendships and are working well together as a team in rooms 3 &4.

This week we spent time on classroom/school expectations and routines. Please remember that we enter and exit from Door 2 on the compound. Students also require indoor shoes. Please no sandals or dressy shoes as they are not safe during gym. If you are going to be late, please come through the office to sign your child in. For lunch, grade three students go outside to play for the first part of lunch and eat the second half. During the day, our class as two snack breaks. One in the morning, where we encourage our students to have healthy 'brain food' to keep them going for the morning and the second during our afternoon. Please ensure they have a second snack for the afternoon. Please also refrain from sending juice boxes as students typically do not finish them and the left overs attract unwanted bugs in the classroom.

Some things that we completed this week include:

Writing and Reading: Reminders of expectations during these times. Each day, students will be challenged to complete a writing question that have a variety of topics such as: telling a joke, finishing a story or sharing information about themselves. We also completed our first monthly writing prompt.

Our book bins have also been filled with just right books. We will be able to sign books out from the library beginning in October.

Math: We completed some number talks where we discuss various strategies used to solve a problem. By having discussions as a group, students are able to work together and share their understanding in a safe environment. Next week we will begin our patterning unit.

Inquiry: On Friday we completed our first of many STEM challenges with Mrs. Quilley and Mrs. Sloane's classes. Our challenge this week was to create the tallest and lightest free standing structure using marshmallows, spaghetti, tape and string. Students displayed a good understanding of what was needed to work together as a group and how to listen to one another.

Thank you to our parent council for supplying our school recess snack!!
